A fine example of a well managed and maintained 18 hole golf course, the design of the course is fantastic and it’s a course you’ll want to visit again and again.
Overview
Summary
A real gem of an 18 hole course, there's huge variation of quality and challenges between holes and it's one of the best municipal courses in the area.
This 18 hole course is only 3 miles from Wakefield City Centre.
A Par 72, 18 holes, 6,400 yards golf course nestled away on the city outskirts. The clubhouse / sports pavilion features a small shop where you can purchase a small number of accessories such as tee’s and balls, gloves etc but don’t expect much more.
There is a small set of practice driving nets to the left of the shop and there is also buggy hire but please call ahead to ensure availability. The amenities are quite minimal as the club shop is on a shared grounds and both golf and Rugby are managed through the Gaskell Sports Pavilion, which does have a full bar and facilities but this is focused more towards the Rugby enthusiasts rather than golf.
There is also a small putting practice area but it’s not a living green, it’s an artificial turfed area with several holes spread across the area. Don’t let the lack of amenities put you off visiting this course, just plan well ahead to ensure you have everything you need before you leave the house.
A wide range of Golf challenges
There’s 3 huge Par 5 holes, 12 Par 4’s and 3 Par 3’s on offer at Wakefield City Golf course, which makes this course feel larger and longer than most. The first nine holes (aside of hole #9) are found to the left of the course and are built around a sloping contour offering interesting and challenging lies (especially between holes #2 through to #8).
The back nine is longer than the front, with only one Par 3 on this stretch, hole #12 through to hole #15 are a fantastic challenge, driving up the contour and then several mid to long 300+ yard holes are a real pleasure. The final two holes feature a 141 downhill Par 3 protected hole, followed by a blind 373 yard Par 4 final hole back to the sports pavillion.
A hole to remember
Hole #4 is a dogleg right 317 Yard Par 4 hole. The hole is hidden from the tee box and unless you’re a tour pro going over the tall trees aiming towards the right of the green, the safe choice is the direct and straight route to the left of the smaller set of trees.
If you land your drive past the smaller set of trees, you’ve then got a relatively straight drive, beware of heavy rough both left and right of the fairway as this is in parts, knee deep !
The fairway is very generous in it’s size but it is very fast so be careful with your ball placement. There is a slope on this green from front right toward the back left and there is also a hidden bunker to be aware of. Pending on how the groundskeeping is feeling the hole placement can be very tricky, especially if it is rear left on the edge.
