A formidable and long 9 hole golf course nestled in the heart of rural Bradford with stunning view across the area.
Overview
Summary
This course is considered to be the longest 9 hole golf course in Yorkshire.
A real test of skill is needed for this Golf Course
A 3177 yard Par 36 hole course set across a series of formidable inclines and a monster of a hill. Founded back in 1906, this Bradford course is steeped in history and features an abundance of mature features and obstacles.
Way finding can be tricky on this course if you have never been before, so take note of the layout from your scorecard (holes #2, #4 and #5Β can be tricky to work out).
There are ample challenges for all levels of golfer at Clayton, the facilities are smaller than some but they are more than adequate and the staff and grounds team are very welcoming, and in summer there is a lovely little beer / drinks garden to watch players coming back into the club house from the ninth.
It’s well worth a visit to this golf club as it’s listed in ‘Britain’s 100 Extraordinary Holes’ by Harvey & Stowger, with hole #8.
A hidden gem hidden away in Bradford City
Blink and you will miss this golf course, located in Clayton just 4 miles from Bradford City Centre this golf club boast some amazing vistas and is set in the heart of Clayton town.
Hole # 5 gives you a picturesque view of the surrounding village where you play almost up to the back garden of the typical back to back houses that made this textile city what it is. As mentioned with this course it’s the beauty of the views that male this golf course stunning and nothing comes to views when you are on the famous ‘Kop’ hole of 8 and then hole #9.
A hole to remember
Hole #9 is a hole you will probably remember for the rest of your life! This Par 5, 536 Yard blind hole is truly magnificent. It follows hole #8 which is their suggested signature ‘Kop’ hole which is a 247yard Par 4 uphill hole, but for us hole #9, is way better.
The view from this perch is incredible and also very nerve racking, you have a 220 yard drive to clear holes #1 & #2 and place yourself in a perfect position for your second swing but beware as the fairway can’t be seen from this lofty position.
A good drive puts you firmly on the fairway with this type of second shot, or an even greater drive sees you clear these two maturing trees. Beware as there is a cross over with Hole #1 so watch out on your next shot for golfers from right to left.
A focus toward the the left hand side of the fairway is favourable, as the hole is protected from your sight by a large collection of trees on the right hand side.
Just when you think you’ve accomplished your mission there is this double tiered green with a very sneaky dipped lip at the front. Pray the green keeper is kind and places the flag on the lower slope when you visit, as this is more generous that the small and harder top level.
