Originally founded in 1995 by the Harrison family, who have deep roots in the local farming community, the golf course was developed on 70 acres of land once owned by the renowned industrialist and philanthropist, Sir Titus Salt.
Overview
Summary
Set in beautiful Huddersfield parkland this 9 hole course is one of the best maintained and serviced courses in the area.
A 9 hole golf course nestled away in rural Brighouse, Huddersfield.
Set across 70 acres of stunning Yorkshire parkland this Par 70 golf course is a genuine bucket list for anyone wanting to play a superbly put together and tendered golf course.
This course is 450 ft above sea level and unlike some courses isn’t subject to the harsh Yorkshire weather so this course is playable almost all year round. There are, like most courses green updates and tee changes during the winter months but the club are very good at updating visitors and members.
What’s really interesting is that the course is less than 30 years old but has a large amount to mature trees and rural parts to the design which gives the feeling of maturity even though it’s really a young golf course.
What we found when we arrived was a very well presented and maintained golf course.
We had the first tee of the day, and we were pleasantly surprised to already see the staff out on the course ensuring that the course was clean, trimmed and ready for play.
Their course website describes the course as immaculate and to be honest, we can’t disagree, Crow Nest was one of the best 9 holes golf courses in the world by Golf World Magazine in March 2010 and probably still is to this day! There is a great mix of holes, 6 Par4’s, 2 Par 3’s and a huge Par 5, way finding was slightly tricky so remember to get a scorecard from the clubhouse or there is a course overlay on the first tee box.
This is classed as an 18 hole golf course although you are playing the same holes in rotation, the nice element to this is that there are different tee boxes on the back 9 and at different positions so the drive from the tee box does on some holes offer different challenges.
A hole to remember
Hole #9 named ‘Stable Way’ is a 526-yard, Par 5, Straight hole. This is the longest hole on the course, it was very hard to separate this hole and hole #5 for the highlight but for a pure challenge, this one stands out are the true gem on this course.
The drive from the tee box needs serious focus as you will need to drill the ball through a bottle neck of two very mature oak trees. This hole is nestled between holes #2 & #6 with the latter being on a lower slope, so any hook shots put you in a very difficult situation chipping over a line of mature trees just to get back onto the right fairway.
A good drive rewards you with a very generous and wide fairway but don’t let that allow you to relax too much as this hole shares a hidden water hazard to the left of the green which is invisible unless you are a few feet away. There is also a hidden slope, so aiming to the right of the fairway for the final approach is the more sensible approach.
The green is set on a high lie and is protected on the front end by two large bunkers. The course designer has been very generous with a 20 foot green which is on a two tier level. Take time once you are on the green to look back up the fairway to see view the stunning patchwork fairway which is a view also shared by the clubhouse.
