A hidden 18 hole golf course hidden away in rural Harrogate

The course is set in the heart of North Yorkshire and a SAT Nav is an absolute must to find this course if this is your first time visiting. Please note that due to some of the hole locations and obstacles that electric buggies or a ride along might struggle on this course. There are a few holes where you need to cross quite small bridges or tight gates which are a bit of a squeeze for any wide golf trollies.

A golf course that truly hides a few nice little secrets

After playing the first few holes the course feels like it’s built around one large open flat expanse of land, with a small sloped contour running front to back. This is the case during the first 9 holes as they are all quite compact and lay next to each other.

If this is your first time it is essential to get a scorecard, as you will find on a number of holes where the next tee box can be 3/4 of the way up the existing hole you are currently playing on. On holes #4 and #7 when you have finished the hole you will need to walk back down the left hand side of the fairway for about 100 to 150 yards to play the next hole/s, slightly confusing but you do get used to this.

When you have finished hole #9 the course suddenly changes and you have a 5 minute walk around the back of the old driving range, through the car park and down to, what feels like a totally different course to start the back 9.

Hole #10 onwards is different in terms of contours, hazards and the actual rough areas. We now have far more different offering in terms of course design, there is an abundance of long grass, there are water hazards in the fairways, and there are even streams to cross. Obviously the course owners don’t have much say on the terrain, but the back 9 feels far more challenging and offers a wider variation in skill than the front, even though the two do intertwine with each other on holes #14 & #15.

It is worthwhile playing here for the back 9 or even if you just fancy playing 9 then the current set up allows you to play directly on holes #10 onwards.

A hole to remember

Hole #3 is a 496 Par 5 dogleg left. From the tee box the fairway is a treelined and there in the distance is a marker pole to aim for. The key to this hole is this initial first drive as there are holes and hazards to both the left and the right. If you are prone to making errors, left of the fairway is woodland so any balls are instantly lost, to the right is hole 18 and the fairway there is quite wide so a recovery shot isn’t going to ruin this hole for you.

The second half of the fairway is incredibly generous and is downhill, so on a good dry day you will easily pick up an extra 10 to 20 yards bounce. You still can’t see the green from this marker area as it is protected by a series of trees to the bottom left of the fairway.

The green is relatively easy to find, there is a small bunker to the front left but (in your favour), there is a mini hill for anyone who over shoots the green which should ease the pain and roll the ball back onto the green for you.
