Thorne is a mature golf course set in the heart of South Yorkshire’s beautiful countryside, and only a few minutes drive from the M18 or M180.
Overview
Summary
A well run and managed 18 hole golf course in Doncaster.
A good example of a South Yorkshire golf course
This course is a 5294 yard 68 total par site with a series of water and bunker holes. Established and opened in 1980 the course is family owned and self managed with a wide range of onsite amenities.
Nestled within a large, mature Parkland
Although quite a young golf course the holes feels very established and the trees that line courses are mature and offer a real level of difficulty. The course has a good natural flow between the holes although if we had one criticism is that there are large number of direct / straight holes, so this course will favour a low handicap. The course is also very flat (we visited on a damp day so the land irrigation wasn’t perfect) but don’t be put off by this as most courses suffer slightly in the winter months.
A hole to remember
This course saves the best hole for last.
Hole #18, is a 275 yard par 4 dog leg left with a blind island green heavily protected by water and is accessible by a small bridge.
You can chose to hit your big dog and aim to the right of the green but beware that there is a small water ditch to the right and if you land in there it’s a definite penalty drop.
Alternatively you can play sensible and hit a lower iron and play it short, both options leave you with a testing chip over the water and hopefully onto the green ready for putting !!!
