Summary
A well-maintained hidden gem, with varying degrees of difficulty across 9 holes.
Tucked away down a small side street, blink and you will miss this course.
This Par 70 6099 yards is suitable for all golf levels, and back in 2018 had new tree placement added across the course to help better define the boundaries. The course is built on undulating ground which offers a decent challenge as the majority of holes have a difference in contours and levels so the majority of holes are not flat.
Prior to being a golf course this was the old Whitwood Colliery site, which was a Yorkshire mine originating back to 1854. There is still part of the Colliery machinery from the late 1950’s still in place at the site which serves as a stunning backdrop of some of the holes.
Overall this course is enjoyable, it’s reasonably priced and the facilities whilst being small offer a decent drink and snack and sell some a small amount golf accessories.
There’s also Footgolf here
In May 2016 Whitwood installed a 9 hole footgolf course at the back of the clubhouse. The course combines a multitude of course arrangements including woodland, bridges and of course open grassland. It’s suitable for people aged 6 and above but players under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. There are no special requirements to play other than no spikes or studs on the turf, normal trainers are perfectly fine.
A hole to remember
The hole to remember is hole #8 which is a 316 par 4. A slight dogleg left dropping running across a right to left slope, with the green protected on the front left and back right by testing bunkers.
This is such a nice hole to play, you tee off from a hidden area up and over a ridge, ensure you don’t hit right or you are in a world of trouble in the thick wood. Once over the ridge, the hole opens itself up and a good 8 or 9 iron will drop you perfectly onto the green for that birdie putt.
First time visiting and first time playing for quite a while but the course was great, well maintained and a good... variety of challenges.Bar looked great, I just didn't have time to stay this visit🤣read more
We don’t play golf however we love to come here during our walks with the dogs and sit in the beer garden and have a... drink! Great staff & everyone is friendlyread more
We stupidly Didnt book, but the owner let us jump on inbetween. Great price and a tricky but nice course. Tricky... because you can end up playing on a slope if every shot isnt perfect which rarely is for me, also it's a mature course so rough means roughread more
Footgolf: incredible day out playing footgolf. Excellent 9 opening course wasn't excessively wet despite the fact that... it had come down the prior night. Just idea is that the way running close to it is fenced off. My ball went down there twice and was a battle to get back up haha.read more
Maintenance could be better. Course is a 9 hole size but tries to be a 9 or 18, causing holes to cross paths. As a 9,... it is worth the very reasonable price of £12.read more
Footgolf: great day out playing footgolf. Very good 9 hole course wasn't too wet even though it had rained the night... before. Only suggestion is that the path running next to it is fenced off. My ball went down there twice and was a struggle to get back up haha.read more
