A Wakefield based 9 hole course with the feel and quality of 18 hole golf course

Designed by Micheal Shattock, this 9 hole course is a combination of his design and the green staffs knowledge and construction from the bigger 18 hole brother course. The course isn’t in the main grounds of the club, you will find this just outside across the road, along with a practice driving range (balls purchased from the club house).

The course is fairly straight apart from 1 dogleg right hole, where accurate drive can see you sat nicely on the green if you take out the corner. What’s nice about this course is the overall quality and the challenge as some hole are tight and accuracy is a must on this course.

Bookings are not essential but the course is popular, if it is busy when you arrive and you haven’t booked, there is a practice range just to the right of the course where you can loosen up until the first hole is clear.

A higher cost than most 9 hole golf courses but for a good reason

The price bracket on this course is higher than most 9 holes in the area but this is due to the fact that this course is maintained to the same high standards as their 18 hole. When we played, there were staff working on the course and the greens were immaculate and the balls glided across them perfectly.

I’d much rather pay that little extra in some cases to experience a higher quality of golf than pay less and the golf experience be of a lower quality.

A hole to remember

Hole #9 is a 211 par 4 downhill drive. A good straight drive is key here as we have a patch of very deep rough to the left and to the right of the hole there is a water hazard.

The fairway is very wide and forgiving so only a huge slice or hook will get you into trouble. Maybe consider putting the driver away for this hole and playing a 6 iron and laying up short to give yourself and steady chip onto the green.

The green is huge so there is plenty to aim for. What’s great about this green is that it’s on multiple levels and also on a downward slope, so you need to focus and have a good eye for reading greens otherwise you could easily 3 putt on this hole.

Thurs 25th May 2023, just got home having played in the Spring Open… WPGC has been on my to-play list for a year or so,... and I was not disappointed. The condition of the course is absolutely fantastic, definitely a notch or two up from other similar bracket courses, in fact pretty much everything was a notch or two up; the food, the staff, the setting, the practice facilities, all brilliant. May I recommend though, to enhance the visitor experience, that signage be added to the course to show where the teeing area is for the next hole. To sign off, well done to everybody involved at Woolley Park Golf Club, first class!read more
