Match play is a popular golf tournament format where players compete against each other in individual matches.

Here are the basic rules of match play:

  1. Pairings: Players are paired up in head-to-head matches, with the winner of each match moving on to the next round.

  2. Scoring: Instead of counting total strokes, players earn one point for each hole they win, and a half-point for each hole that is tied. The player with the most points at the end of the round wins the match.

  3. Concession: Players can concede a hole if they feel that they have no chance of winning it.

  4. Handicaps: Handicaps are typically not used in match play, but some tournament organizers allow for them with a certain format.

  5. Maximum strokes: A maximum number of strokes is typically set for each hole, if the player’s score exceeds that number, they are considered to have “busted” the hole and they must pick up their balls and move on to the next hole.

  6. Ties: In case of a tie after 18 holes, extra holes are played until a winner is determined.

  7. Prize: The winner of each match advances to the next round until a champion is determined.

It’s important to note that these rules are general guidelines, and that every tournament may have different variations or specific rules. It’s best to check with the tournament organizer to confirm the rules before starting to play. Additionally, match play can be played with different variations like stroke play, fourball, and foursomes.
