Overview
Summary
A picturesque municipal 9 hole golf course set in the middle of Roundhay
A 9 hole golf course just 4 miles from Leeds City Centre
Roundhay Golf course was established in 1922 and can be found in the popular parkland area next to Roundhay park. This mature 9 hole course is well maintained and offers a good level of competition and challenge. The course is built upon a series of slopes where you have the first 4 holes playing to the left of the slope and the back 5 playing to the side and down the hill.
What’s nice about this golf course is that every hole is very different and each needs their own special focus and unique play to get a decent score. The transition between holes #2 and hole #5 are really exciting. With hole #2 you play the longest hole on the course which is a Par 5 478 yards uphill on an elevated green. Hole #3 is then a great short Par 3 188 yard downhill to the flag. Hole #4 is the hardest hole with a Par 4 huge up and over with a blind drive, leading you then back up the hill with hole #5 with another blind drive back up the hill.
As mentioned each hole is different and the enjoyment and challenge will keep you on your toes and make you want to come back again and again, especially when the price point for this course is very reasonable.
Small but Adequate Golf facilities
The pro shop is very small but they do have a well stocked set of golf consumables from drinks and snacks through to clubs, clothing and footwear. There is a practice area to the left of the car park but there are not any range balls to purchase so you will need to bring your own and then collect them down the fairway.
There is a large club house where you can relax and grab an alcoholic drink and watch golfers coming back up the 9th, there is also a practice putting green next to the club house where you can warm up also.
A hole to remember
Hole #6, is a 266 yard Par 4 with a stroke index of 9. The tee box is in a very tricky area, its on a 40 foot elevated plinth, there is no grass so you are driving from an artificial turf area. The view to the hole is blocked by the edge of woodland and to the right there are several mature tree so your target area is incredibly limited.
The fairway naturally slopes left to right but it’s a big enough area to reach and have a decent view of the green. The green itself is nestled in the top left corner, protected at the front by several bunkers and to the rear thick woodland making your second shot the most important of the hole.
The green is inspired by Doctor Alastair Mackenzie double tier system, it all depends on the groundkeeper as to where they place the flag. The hardest is always at the back of the top tier where the greatest fear is either going off the back of the green into the rough or not putting enough into the shot and rolling down to the lower level.
