Dating back to 1923 and a design history with Doctor Alastair Mackenzie this 6348 yard par 71 course is steeped in Leeds history.
Overview
Summary
A Doctor Alastair Mackenzie designed golf course, set in East Leeds next to a historic state home.
Located next to one of Leeds Grand Tudor Jacobean stately homes
This course has been recently reworked by merging two 18 hole courses into one. The layout has significantly changed so please take a score card as the route between holes #3, #4 and #5 are slightly hard to follow when you first play them.
Set in Stunning Parkland and featuring two Par 5’s and 4 Par 3’s this course is incredibly challenging and like all Doctor Alastair Mackenzie courses they have his signature challenges still within them.
Like most of his designs, this golf course perfectly nestles itself perfectly into the landscape and delivers some incredible vistas of the surrounding area. You won’t be disappointed when you visit this course and there are a few hidden gems and real holes of pleasure to be found at this course.
A Golf Course with a pedigree of Leeds history
If you know anything about golf design the name Doctor Alastair Mackenzie needs no introduction, with a pedigree of courses designed under his name and spanning 4 continents including, Troon, Royal Melbourne, St.Andrews and Augusta National.
Back in 1923 Doctor Alastair Mackenzie designed this course for Leeds Council which was named Lord Irwin and then a second course was designed and built in 1925 and named Lady Dorothy, who were the owners of the Jacobean stately home called Temple Newsam.
Probably the most important golf historic event has also taken place at this course in 1933 with Poppy Wingate who was England’s first professional woman golfer, and she began her career right here at Temple Newsam.
A hole to remember
Hole #15 is a 204 yard Par 3 with a stroke index of 11.
From the tee box the green is slightly elevated, this is a fairly easy target to hit as the hole offers a reasonably sized green.
We always love the opportunity and thrill of going for the coveted ‘hole in one’ which is why we have chosen hole #15 as a hole to remember, and the reason for this is that this green is heavily protected by 3 huge bunkers which the grounds keeper very cleverly places the flag position in such a way that makes these too close for comfort !
